The story begins in 1975, as Steve Banerjee (Naveen Andrews), scouts locations for a new location in Los Angeles. He enters a shabby former male strip club, inspects the space and decides it is the perfect place in which to develop his ideas. Several years later, Nick Denoia ( Paul Hipp), an Emmy award-winning choreographer and director, enters Steve's nearly-empty male strip club, which is occupied only by a very small group of women and a sleazy male stripper. Nick has no interest in being there other than to scout the location for an upcoming television shoot. Steve jumps at the opportunity to pitch Nick on his idea for a high-class male strip club for women. With his choreographic talent, the male club's routines could be made into a world class show, the first of its kind. Nick hesitates at first, but eventually allows himself to be drawn in by Steve's enticing vision. Once the deal is finalized, they agree that Steve will have control of all business and monetary dealings, while he will be given total artistic control of their new Chippendales, male strip club venture. They decide to name their venture after the male strip club's curved-leg chairs, whose elegant and curved designs they hoped to emulate in their shows: Chippendales. He sets out to find a core group of hot young male strippers, and begins recruiting prospects from the local beaches and gyms for this Chippendales, male strip club concept. After calling in a select group of male strippers for auditions, he selects who will become the male strip club's feature male strippers and who will work as bouncers and waiters. Working closely with his "star" dancers Shaun Boyd ( Alex DeBoe) and Marco Carolo (Victor Webster), Nick's choreographic talents combined with the dancers' obvious sex appeal propel Chippendales forward. It is not long before Nick brings Steve's dream of the first Chippendales male strip club show for women to life. Chippendales popularity soon begins to make him paranoid that his success will be taken away from him, either by Nick or by competing male strip clubs who imitate the Chippendales concept. In a desperate attempt to maintain control of his empire, Steve meets with an ex-con named Carl Ramone. Steve convinces Carl to help him send a message to anyone who tries to compete with Chippendales by firebombing a competing male strip club which is about to open. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Steve and Nick's relationship is deteriorating rapidly, with each convinced that the other's actions are destined to destroy the business. Dave ( Dan Horton), an aspiring dancer who is serving as the Chippendales male strip club manager, confronts Steve about getting a cut of the profits when he takes the dancers on traveling tours, complaining that Nick has been giving Marco a cut of the profits from tours on the East Coast. Little does Dave know that he has just sealed Nick's fate: Steve was not aware that Nick was setting up East Coast tours in the first place. Finally, in 1987, Steve arranges a hit on Nick through Carl. An unmasked assailant enters Nick's New York office and fires a single shot into Nick's forehead, killing him instantly. The assailant himself is never caught and later dies of a drug overdose, leaving the trail back to Steve cold and virtually untraceable. Now Steve's continued success seems assured. Steve's paranoia and distrust of those around him becomes worse than ever. His mistrust and greed soon start to completely absorb his every waking hour, and he remains convinced that eliminating his competition -- by any means necessary -- is the only way to guarantee his continued success. Will his paranoid tendencies eventually result in Steve's total downfall? |
